In August 2017, we met Olga and Aziza at the graduation of their CareerPathways course in aged and disability care from Macquarie Community College. We learnt about how they overcame adversity to complete their course and were excited about embarking on the next step of their career training; a CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support with a dual specialisation in Disability and Aged Care.
Now, 5 months down the track, we were pleased to catch up with the whole class, who have now completed and attained their CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support with Macquarie Community College.
Job offers for many of the students
Out of the 11 women in their class, 8 received job offers* and have commenced working in the aged care and disability industry. Some of these job offers were as a direct result from their work placements during their studies at Macquarie Community College. Work placements are organised for students to gain real life work experience whilst studying.
One student excitedly says “I am very happy that I did this course. I got a job and I am working now”.
Her classmate, adds “I just want to thank Macquarie Community College for everything. I did develop my skills in aged care and disability and now I am doing a casual job with AFEA”.
Another student in the class was also pleased with the outcome of her studies at Macquarie Community College. She was snapped up by her employer in her first work placement and offered a casual paid job at the beginning of the course. Since graduating, she has now been offered a permanent position as an Assistant in Nursing.
Their trainer, Jodi, can’t help but feel proud of her students. Each day she looked forward to teaching this class, who she says was made up of some of the most “committed, reliable and engaged students”. Jodi continues, “The women have all had to overcome various barriers, from learning English, to settling into a new country, to homelessness. They were all so determined to finish the course and really created a sisterhood within the class. They supported each other through their studies, and have become lifelong friends”.
