This year marks Macquarie Community College’s 75th anniversary. Adding to the celebrations, we’re also marking the 10-year anniversary of our energetic CEO, Theresa Collignon. Over the past decade, Theresa has been a driving force behind the growth and success of our community – based training programs, leading with dedication and a passion for the empowering force of education.
A Journey of Transformation
Theresa’s journey to Macquarie Community College began in the early 1990s, transitioning from a career in product marketing into her first education role in tutoring and program management at university.
Today, Theresa’s extensive experience spans every sector of education, from early childhood to lifelong learning for seniors. Before joining the college, Theresa held senior roles at the Securities Institute of Australia, AFS Youth Exchange (Australia and USA), the Smith Family and the National Scholarships Foundation for TAFE Directors Australia.
Ten years of making a difference

Theresa has led Macquarie Community College with the vision of shaping stronger communities through the power of learning and connection. This includes a focus on supporting those facing barriers and disadvantage and helping them to create better futures through gaining foundational skills and completing nationally recognised qualifications.
This has led to the College becoming not only a high performing Smart and Skilled training provider, but also a vital part of its local communities across Western and Northwestern Sydney.
People and Programs
Theresa’s commitment to building a dedicated and talented team has been instrumental in the College’s success, which enrols 3,500 students a year and employs 170 staff. The College has also grown to offer hundreds of classes across six dedicated campuses in Blacktown, Carlingford, Chatswood, Epping, Mt Druitt, and Ryde, as well as in community venues, employer sites, and online.

A substantial number of these classes includes programs that support employment and social inclusion. Among these are digital literacy, English language courses for migrants, and highly regarded practical qualification training for careers in early childhood education and care, aged and disability care.
Impact and Recognition
Macquarie Community College’s impact on the community is profound. In the most recent National Student Outcomes Survey report, over 32% of previously unemployed students who studied with the College have gone on to gain employment. In 2022, 45.1% of MCC’s surveyed students reported improved employment status, up 6% from the previous year. Additionally, 96% of qualified learners recommend Macquarie Community College, a testament to the quality and effectiveness of its programs.

New ways to support the community
One of Theresa’s proudest achievements is the establishment of Gateway Community High in 2021. Starting with places for 30 students to complete their Stage 5 studies and achieve their Record of School Achievement (RoSA), the School now offers places for 80 students from Years 9 to 12 and the HSC. This inclusive alternative high school has added a new dimension to Macquarie Community College’s life-changing work.

Overcoming Challenges
Theresa has navigated the College through numerous challenges, including the Covid years and the unpredictable funding and policy landscape of the adult community education and vocational education and training sectors. Despite these hurdles, the College has posted its eighth consecutive surplus. This financial stability allows Macquarie Community College to reinvest in creating and growing new services to meet the needs of the diverse communities the College serves.
Looking Ahead
As the College celebrates its 75th anniversary, Theresa’s vision for the future remains clear. The College is committed to growing its impact, leveraging its strengths while exploring new ideas that ensure inclusive, quality education and training drives social, workforce and economic inclusion for our learners and our communities.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Theresa’s leadership is characterised by her strategic thinking, optimism, and strong work ethic. Her entrepreneurial spirit, shaped by her migrant parents and professional experiences, has driven her success in leading the College. She is seen as an authentic leader, passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of students and the community.
As we celebrate Theresa Collignon’s 10-year anniversary as CEO, we reflect on the incredible journey and achievements that have shaped Macquarie Community College into the thriving organisation it is today. Her dedication and vision continue to inspire us all, and we look forward to many more years of success and growth under her leadership.
