Tutor Spotlight: Leigh Wood

A Journey of Yoga, Teaching, and Lifelong Learning at Macquarie Community College.

Leigh Wood’s journey with yoga began long before she became a loved tutor at Macquarie Community Colleges. Leigh’s story is one of passion, dedication, and commitment to helping others find balance, strength, and peace through this ancient practice.

A Lifelong Passion for Yoga

Leigh’s love affair with yoga started during her school days. Encouraged by a teacher who saw her potential, she trained and embarked on a lifelong journey of teaching. Over the years, Leigh has explored various styles of yoga. However it’s Hatha Yoga that truly resonates with her. This traditional form offers a complete system of physical and mental wellbeing — a system Leigh has honed and adapted for her students.

A Deep Connection with Macquarie Community College Students

What sets Leigh apart as a tutor is her deep connection with her students:

“I love teaching and interacting with participants who are taking time out of their busy lives to focus on their physical and mental wellbeing,” Leigh shares. “It’s wonderful to work with so many talented students and see their improvement over the term.”

Leigh’s classes are ever-evolving, with each term bringing a new program tailored to the season. This approach allows participants to monitor their progress and delve deeply into the movements. Over the decades, Leigh has seen many students transform, both physically and mentally. Some have even become yoga teachers themselves, continuing the legacy of this ancient practice.

Adapting to all Abilities

Leigh’s experience and understanding of yoga’s adaptability have led her to teach a diverse range of students.

“I have recently started teaching at a retirement village and I’m enjoying the challenge of adapting the practice to those with limited mobility and various health challenges,” she says.

Hatha Yoga, with its emphasis on breath, balance, and flexibility, can be modified to suit everyone, whether they are practicing on a mat, in a chair, or with the help of props. Leigh ensures that each participant works at their own pace, fostering an environment of inclusivity and support.

Moments of Joy and Achievement

Leigh’s teaching journey is filled with moments of joy and achievement. One of her favourite stories is about the “kitchen bench pose.” This is a simple yet effective stretch that she encourages her students to incorporate into their daily lives.

“We all do the kitchen bench pose every day,” Leigh explains. “You stand a body length out from the bench, put your hands on the bench. Try to stretch out your spine so that it is parallel to the floor, making a right angle at the hips. It’s excellent for the shoulders, legs, and spine.”
