We are nearly 1 month into the new decade. Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions yet?
According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46% of people who made New Year’s resolutions were successful*. This means more than half of the people who set a goal for the new year will fail!
Make sure 2020 is your year for success!
Here are some of the top New Year’s Resolutions that people have set for 2020^
1. Actually doing my New Year’s resolution
Stay motivated and focused on your goals for the year by learning strategies from a life coach on how to set and achieve your goals.
Don’t let the end of the year creep up on you without accomplishing your resolutions. Make sure you manage your time well.
2. Trying something new
People are most motivated at the start of the year. Now’s the perfect time to start a new hobby such as french polishing, upholstery, acrylic pouring, or learn a new skill in drawing and painting, jewellery making or mosaic.
If you are planning an overseas trip soon, start learning a foreign language now to make your trip more enjoyable!
3. Go to the gym and be more healthy
Take advantage of the early sunrise and good weather and try a new sport such as golf, tennis or aquafitness. You can even dance your way to fitness with Tap Dancing or Ballroom Dancing.
Think through whether there any bad habits that you need to break in order to achieve your goals? A bad habit is a negative behaviour pattern for example, chain smoking, emotional eating, obsessively watching TV/using social media etc. Bad habits are not easy to break, especially if you find them enjoyable, but it is possible.
4. Be happier, have better mental health and be a better person
Take time out of each day to reflect and experience mindfulness.
Next time you are standing in a queue, rather than getting stressed about how long you have been waiting, try this meditation exercise. Scan your body for areas of tension. When you find one, simply say in your mind ‘relax’ and let that tension go. Keep going from the top of your head all the way to the bottom of your feet.
You have just practiced meditation and it only took 1 minute out of your day!Congratulations!
Starting from 1 minute a day and building up to as many minutes a day as you can spare, you will start reaping the benefits of meditation.
Try a Yoga or Meditation class to help you learn how to experience more calm and mindfulness this year.
5. Upgrade my technology
Did you get a new laptop, tablet, smartwatch or smartphone for Christmas? Technology is moving at such a rapid pace, it’s hard to keep up!
Improve your computer skills with a course in Computer Basics, or specific courses in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Publisher or Powerpoint.
If you’re over 60, you can also attend our Tech Savvy Seniors classes to learn how to use your computer, smart devices, and all about cyber security.
