What an exciting start to 2023! After three years of lockdowns, restrictions and social isolation, it wasn’t a surprise that people were keen to get out and about. The Covid pandemic affected many, but our seniors were one of the most vulnerable.
This year’s Seniors Week theme, Celebrate Together, was not only a celebration of our elderly citizens and their contribution to their community, but it was also an encouragement for them to come out and reconnect.
To celebrate Seniors Week Festival, Macquarie Community College hosted events across two days at our Carlingford campus. Our senior friends were treated to a scrumptious afternoon tea along with the opportunity to ‘taste’ some of our classes.
About 100 enthusiastic seniors enrolled in some of our regular classes where they learnt Computing, Creative Writing, Dancing, Flower Arrangement, Foreign Languages, Needlecraft, Tai Chi and Qigong, and Yoga. Also on offer were new concept classes – Makeup for Seniors, Create a Mini Herb Garden, and Fun Things To Do With Your Photos. These new classes proved popular, booking out days in advance.
Some of the event feedback already received:
"Louise was a wonderful and inspiring tutor. I was surprised how much I learnt about flower arrangements in this very short taster session.”

Macquarie Community College believes that participation in quality life-long learning is transformational. Our work is encouraged by the successes of students who come to our campuses and leave with great appreciation and the skills which they can apply in the future. Leo, a senior and a recent graduate, shared his learning journey with the College– which started from basic computing and progressed to our Intermediate Computer Skills for Work & Study.
We would like to thank our guests for visiting us and we would like to encourage more seniors to ‘never stop learning’.Term 1 classes are currently running. Check out our catalogue to see what's currently on offer.
