The impact of Covid-19 has been felt all around the world and it has devastated many industries, in particular the airline industry. So, when Carolyn was stood down in March by her airline, she knew she had to take charge of her career and re-skill in another area as she recognised it could take years for the airline industry to recover.
Aged & disability care skills are in demand
Carolyn decided to get ahead of the game and to look for jobs now before the market was flooded with people coming off JobKeeper. She noticed that the most in-demand jobs were roles in aged care and disability care. Before her 30 years’ experience as a Flight Attendant, Carolyn trained as a Registered Nurse, so the aged and disability care industries seemed to be a good fit for her background.
The flexibility of doing shift work or working for an agency was attractive to her, as well as the many different types of roles that she could pursue in a nursing home, disability centre or in a home care arrangement. Starting a qualification now, also meant that she would graduate shortly after JobKeeper would run out.
Fee-free* training
Carolyn was impressed with Macquarie Community College’s offering, saying it ‘ticked all the right boxes’ for her. The ease in being able to communicate with a ‘real person’ in our Sales and Service Team, as well as being able to find information and feel supported straight away by the College’s Team, added to her satisfaction that she chose the right place to study the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing & Disability).
To make things sweeter still, Carolyn enrolled at the perfect time and was able to take advantage of the Skilling for Recovery Training Initiative, a matched funding commitment of almost $320 million between the NSW and Australian governments under the JobTrainer Fund. This meant that Carolyn could save thousands of dollars as her qualification was fee-free*!
After only a few weeks into the course, Carolyn is already very impressed with the high level of training that the qualification provides as well as with the comprehensive textbook. The future is now a bit brighter for Carolyn and she can see so many more paths that she can take. Carolyn, we wish you the best of luck in the future – the sky’s the limit!
