Jennifer immigrated to Australia a few years ago and struggled to find a job as an Accountant due to her low level of English. After a friend recommended she study English language at Macquarie Community College, her English communication skills drastically improved, along with her confidence, and helped her find her dream role in the industry!
Find out more about Jennifer’s story below.
Why did you decide to study English?
"I am a first generation migrant from China. Although I have an accounting qualification and experience, I found English communication was a block for me to further my career. I could not get the type of work I wanted because I did not have good English language skills.
Before studying at Macquarie Community College, I had looked for a job for 2 years. I was offered basic accounting clerk work, but while working, I felt that my English communication was not good enough for me to be able to do better at my job and further my career.
My friend recommended me to study English at Macquarie Community College and I enrolled into English for Work – Business at Chatswood."
Did improving your English help you find a job?
"Yes! I saw an accounting job ad whilst I was studying English. I applied for it and my English Teacher, Jolanta, helped me a lot too. She proofread my resume and cover letter, she even helped me prepare for the questions at the job interview. I successfully got the job which matched my accounting qualification. I was so happy!
What did you like most about studying at Macquarie Community College?
"I like the small classes. It feels more personal and I can easily ask my teacher questions. I like how all the other students are excited to learn too.
My teacher, Jolanta, is also from a non-English speaking background. She is a great role model for me and gave me hope that one day I can be just as good as her in speaking English."
What is your advice to other people wanting to study English?
"Never give up! Set a goal, work hard and you can achieve it!
Macquarie Community College’s Chatswood campus is a great place to learn. The management team, classmates and teachers were really supportive. There is no judgement from other students. We still keep in touch with each other!"
What’s next for you?
"The course gave me good English language skills and Jolanta boosted my confidence in oral communication. She always encouraged us to be strong learners and to continue learning. So now I am continuing with my studies at MCC, doing the English Reading & Writing Skills – Advanced Plus course after work at night time!"
