Course Overview
Do you want to take your career to the next level? The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course provides you with the knowledge, skills and qualification to work with children in a variety of roles and settings such as preschools, long day care services, child care centres and family day care.
This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of how a child’s mind and body works and the developmental milestones a child typically reaches.
It also provides you with all the information you need to know to work in the early childhood industry in Australia, including first aid, health and safety, Australian law, regulations and the peak government agencies you will work alongside as a Diploma graduate. The diploma course also provides you with the advanced skills to develop and maintain excellent partnerships with the families and children in your care.

Course outcome
At the end of the course, you will be able to confidently care for children aged 0-6 years focusing on the child’s overall health, education and development. You will be able to interact with educators, families and children and to provide support for children and their families as needed.
On successful completion of the course you will be issued with a CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care where competency has been achieved.
What is involved
Time commitment
The completion time for the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care and Care may vary according to the educational background and any relevant experience of the student.
The student will be expected to complete approximately 30 hours of study per week (full time or the equivalent part time) consisting of face-to-face classes or online Zoom training and at home study.
Students are required to complete 280 hours of work placement in a regulated children's education and care facility in Australia.
Assessment
Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:
- Meet the requirements of the relevant training package or accredited course, and
- Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
- Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.
For this course assessment will entail the following:
- Written assessment and/or verbal assessments;
- Practical simulation and group role play;
- Independent and/or group research and class presentation;
- Work placements practical skills and observation by the assessor.
Work placement
Students are required to complete 280 hours of work placement in a regulated Early Childhood Education and Care facility where you will work as a volunteer student during work-placement.
Please note: The practical workplace component is scheduled at various stages through the course. Before commencing work placement, you will be required to obtain one or all of the following which will be confirmed during the enrolment process and at your course induction. If required Macquarie Community College will assist you with this application process.
- A current Working with Children’s check (free of charge for volunteers)
- An up to date vaccination record (any GP or vaccination costs)
- Suitable work placement clothing is required: i.e. black pants, polo shirt and leather (or leather-like) fully enclosed shoes with non-slip soles.

Entry requirements
Prerequisite: Essential
An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills is required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process.
Entry to this qualification is open to students who hold a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
Obtain a Working With Children Check (WWCC)
Provide a NSW Vaccination record
Prerequisite: Desirable
Experience in working in a regulated children's education and care service will be valuable in providing the context for learning in the course. This also allows students the opportunity to implement the skills they gain during the course.

For remote learning online Zoom classes students will need a stable internet connection on computer or laptop to participate.
