Celtic Art – Mini Mandalas

Course Overview

This course will take you step-by-step through the techniques of drawing Celtic patterns within a circle.

We will create mini mandalas with basic designs of Celtic knots, spirals and key patterns using proven formula that are easy to follow.

Our tutor will demonstrate painting techniques and discuss different ways of applying colour to complete your designs.

Continuing students will be provided with a project and supported with new work they are creating.

Course outline

In this course you ‘Celtic Mini Mandalas’, will learn:

  • How to draw Celtic knots
  • How to draw Spiral designs with a single coil, double coil, triple coil & quadruple coil
  • How to draw 5 unit Key patterns
  • How to combine Celtic knots, spiral designs and key patterns into one mandala design
  • How to outline and tidy your designs
  • How to apply colour to Celtic mandala patterns

Course outcome

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Draw Celtic knots patterns in a circle
  • Draw Spiral designs with a single coil, double coil, triple coil & quadruple coil into a circle
  • Draw 5 unit Key patterns in a circle
  • Combine Celtic knots, spiral designs and key patterns into one mandala design
  • Outline and tidy your designs
  • Apply colour to your Celtic mandala patterns
  • Create your own Celtic mandala artworks


What you need to know

Entry requirements

This course is open to beginners and continuing students.

  • Ability to Mark of measurements with a ruler
  • Ability to use a compass & protractor

What you need to provide

Materials list for students:
  • 2B mechanical/pacer pencil
  • Ruler, 30cm or longer
  • Eraser
  • Compass
  • Colour media, what you have or prefer to use: colour pencils; pigment markers; other felt tip markers; OR
    • Paints – water colours or watercolour gouache, acrylics.
    • Empty jar, for rinse water
    • Rag, soft & absorbent like t-shirt fabric
