Course Overview
Dive into the world of word processing with our Introduction to Microsoft Word!
We will provide an introduction to a popular Microsoft Office product, Microsoft Word. Using ”Word” will allow you to do word processing, create documents, take notes and even write novels!
Come along and learn all about the features of Microsoft Word, including copying, pasting, cutting, using different fonts, text boxes, inserting pictures, file management and more. By the end of the course, you will have created your first document! During class, you will also look at free alternatives to Word. This may be useful if you are an occasional user or just need to read Word documents that are sent to you, but have not purchased Microsoft Word.
No prior knowledge of Microsoft Word is required, making this course accessible and beneficial for all looking to learn more!

What you will learn
Course outline
This course will look at some of the most useful features of Microsoft Word.
Basic copying features:
- Selecting all the text in document
- Selecting some text
- Cutting text
- Copying text
- Pasting text
- The difference between cutting and copying
Manipulating text:
- What are fonts
- Changing fonts
- Pre-created fonts i.e. headings
- Increasing the size of the text
- Underlining text
- Changing the colour of text
Inserting things into the document:
- Pictures
- Shapes
- Headers and footers
Basic file management features:
- Saving documents
- Saving & renaming documents
- Saving documents so the text cannot be changed
- Printing documents
- Including documents as an attachment in an email
More advanced Word features:
- Tables
- Table of contents
Alternatives to Microsoft Word:
- Apple pages
- Google docs
- Libre office writer
Course outcome
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Move text around within a document
- Change the look and feel of text within a document
- Insert non-text items into a document
- Understand and name alternative products to Word and explain their advantages
What you need to know
Entry requirements
This level is for the complete beginner and assumes no prior knowledge.
Prerequisite: Essential
Participants must be over 60 years old. Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and is funded in partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.
Desirable Prerequisite:
This course is suitable for the absolute beginner. Some knowledge of Word would be advantageous, but not essential.

- If you have your own laptop with Windows, please bring it along
On campus students will be provided with a computer during the class.
