Course Overview
Learn Chinese Mandarin with our Beginners course and delve into the most widely spoken language! With over 1 billion speakers, Chinese Mandarin opens up a world of communication and cultural understanding.
Building on the foundation laid by our Introduction to Chinese Mandarin course, which students must complete or have equivalent introductory knowledge, you will immerse yourself in Chinese customs and culture, expanding your vocabulary, refining grammar skills, and delving into the nuances of adjectives and sentence structure.
Topics will include honing Chinese pronunciation, mastering the five intonations, and navigating the Chinese phonetic alphabet, known as pinyin. Additionally, you’ll be introduced to simple Chinese scripts and writing.
By the end of the course, you will be more confident in having a basic conversation in Mandarin. You will also start to master pronouncing and distinguishing between the 5 different tones in Mandarin.

What you will learn
Course outline
In this course your will learn:
- Visiting someone's home
- Chinese customs when visiting someone's home
- Calling someone on the telephone & phone etiquette
- Telephone numbers
- Making appointments
- Studying Chinese
- Using adjectives to describe things
- Introduction to building up your vocabulary as well as basic grammar and order of sentences
- Fine-tune your Chinese pronunciation & the five intonations, Chinese pinyin(Chinese phonetic alphabet) and its rules.
- Some simple Chinese scripts and writing will also be introduced in this class
- Cultural information will also be provided throughout the sessions

Entry requirements
This level assumes that you have completed at least one term of study in an introductory course in Chinese Mandarin.
What you need to provide
- All course material is provided and inclusive with course fees
- Notepad and pen
Other information
This course may not be suitable for learners of Chinese background who have prior knowledge or have some language competency of a different Chinese dialect, e.g. Cantonese. If in doubt, please contact the tutor for an assessment prior to the session. Perhaps a more appropriate level may be offered instead.
